WOMEN OF THE

EVANGELICAL LUTHERAN CHURCH IN AMERICA (WELCA)

STATEMENT OF PURPOSE:

As a community of women created in the image of God, called to discipleship in Jesus Christ, and empowered by the Holy Spirit, we commit ourselves to grow in faith, affirm our gifts, support one another in our callings, engage in ministry and action, and promote healing and wholeness in the church, the society, and the world.

In keeping with our Statement of Purpose, we completed our 2012-13 Bible Study, Gathered by God, and started the 2013-14 study, In Good Company (Stories of Biblical Women), at both Hope and Peace circle meetings. Certainly that experience enabled our women to grow in faith. Both Bible studies appear in the Women of the ELCA magazine, Gather for Faith and Action, that we encourage everyone to subscribe to.

During the year we host many activities that affirm our gifts. We organize bereavement luncheons, coffee hours, Lenten supper, the Mother and Daughter Banquet, Anniversary Luncheon, Summer Tea, and Christmas pot-luck dinner. We also assisted the Easter Breakfast committee and the church Anniversary Luncheon committee. The Niagara Frontier Fall Assembly was also hosted here at St. Martin.

Many of the women support one another in our callings whether that is in Sunday School, Vacation Bible School, youth activities, choir, council, Piecemakers, Thrivent benefits, Samaritan’s Purse Christmas Gifts, and/or the various boards of the Women of the ELCA.

We promote healing and wholeness in the church, the society, and the world. Every year we have a different Ingathering project that benefits people in need in our communities. The NT Food Pantry was the recipient of Personal Care Kits as well as knitted mittens, scarves, and hats. The Salvation Army also received knitted items. We also sent cards to our shut-ins and gave a generous gift to a special St. Martin family.

Our Thankofferings are sent to the church-wide Women of the ELCA once a year. These funds are used to provide programs that support women throughout the world who are in need too.

In all of the activities in which we participated, we invited the women of the congregation to join us. And we will continue to do so. God requires that we extend a hand of welcome to our sisters in Christ and we do appreciate the support you give us.
